Microsoft PowerPoint enables educators to create engaging animated videos with interactive elements. This study shows these videos effectively enhance dental students' learning and engagement, overcoming previous production barriers.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Digital Learning Technologies
Background:
- Animated videos offer educational benefits but are limited by production complexity.
- Educator adoption of animated videos is hindered by technical skill and resource requirements.
Purpose of the Study:
- To demonstrate the creation and effectiveness of interactive animated videos for dental education.
- To assess student engagement and perceptions of using PowerPoint-created animated videos.
Main Methods:
- Utilized Microsoft PowerPoint's animation and voice-over features to produce animated videos.
- Integrated H5P for interactive self-assessment questions within the videos.
- Deployed three videos on oral epithelium and biofilms via a learning management system for Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) students.
Main Results:
- Descriptive study analyzed student interactions and perceptions of the interactive animated videos.
- Most first and second-year DDS students accessed the supplementary videos.
- 94% of surveyed students found the videos clarified concepts and enhanced learning enjoyment, valuing the interactive questions.
Conclusions:
- Microsoft PowerPoint serves as an accessible tool for creating effective animated educational videos.
- Interactive animated videos show potential as a valuable teaching resource for improving student engagement and learning outcomes.
