Public Perceptions and Knowledge of Surgical Facial Rejuvenation: A Cross-Sectional Study in Saudi Arabia

Background:
Facial structures change with age, impacting individuals physically and psychologically. Surgical facial rejuvenation involves a surgical mode of treatment to restore the face to its youthful look. Understanding public knowledge and attitudes toward these procedures is essential for effective patient education and managing expectations regarding surgical outcomes. This study explores the general population's perceptions and knowledge of surgical facial rejuvenation in Saudi Arabia.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted between July 2023 and October 2023 via various social media platforms. The participants' awareness, understanding, and attitudes toward facial rejuvenation procedures were evaluated using motivational factors, barriers, and decision-making preferences. Data were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS v.23).
Results:
A total of 1067 (98.5%) of 1083 participants completed and submitted the survey. The participants included both males (25.1%) and females (74.9%), predominantly from the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia (79.8%). While only 34.7% belonged to the medical profession, 77.6% of participants were aware of facial rejuvenation procedures. A higher proportion of females (63.6%) reported having a relative undergo these procedures compared to males (39.7%, p < 0.001). 55.9% acknowledged associated risks, with more females recognizing the risks (58.7%) than males (47.7%, p = 0.003).
Conclusions:
The knowledge and awareness of surgical facial rejuvenation were favorable. However, religious concerns and safety considerations influenced the use of the procedures, emphasizing the importance of special medical expertise and the increased influence of social media on decision making for aesthetic medicine.
