Skin Diseases and Disorders01:23

Skin Diseases and Disorders

2.8K
Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many...

Viral Recombination00:57

Viral Recombination

23.1K
Cells are sometimes infected by more than one virus at once. When two viruses disassemble to expose their genomes for replication in the same cell, similar regions of their genomes can pair together and exchange sequences in a process called recombination. Alternatively, viruses with segmented genomes can swap segments in a process called reassortment.

Summary

Erythema multiforme (EM), a skin condition often linked to herpes simplex virus (HSV), can be rarely triggered by Toxoplasma gondii infection. This case study highlights successful treatment of recurrent EM caused by toxoplasmosis.

Area of Science:

  • Immunodermatology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Erythema multiforme (EM) is an immune-mediated condition affecting skin and mucosa.
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is the most common trigger, but etiology remains unclear.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging, especially with oral-limited lesions.

Observation:

  • A rare case of recurrent EM was observed.
  • The patient presented with lesions attributed to Toxoplasma gondii infection.
  • Serological testing confirmed toxoplasmosis as the cause.

Findings:

  • Recurrent EM was successfully treated with anti-toxoplasma therapy.
  • Symptomatic management complemented the targeted treatment.
  • Complete resolution of lesions was achieved.

Implications:

  • Toxoplasma gondii should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent EM, particularly atypical presentations.
  • This case expands the known triggers for erythema multiforme.
  • Effective treatment of the underlying infection can lead to long-term remission.
