Long-Term Outcomes following Inferior Vena Cava Stent Placement across the Renal Veins

Abstract:
This study examined the impact of inferior vena cava (IVC) stent placement across the renal veins (RenVs) on renal function and RenV patency. The study cohort consisted of 48 patients who underwent IVC stent placement across the RenVs (RenV+ group) and 96 patients who underwent IVC stent placement sparing the RenVs (RenV- group). Changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (RenV+ vs RenV-, mL/min/1.73 m2) at 1-7 days (-0.8 vs -0.7; P = .979), 8-30 days (1.9 vs 0; P = .658), 31-180 days (0.3 vs -2.1; P = .547), and beyond 180 days (5.8 vs -1.9; P = .058) from IVC stent placement were similar between the 2 groups. There was 1 instance of RenV thrombosis in the RenV+ group (2%) after a mean follow-up of 4.3 years (SD ± 3.1). In conclusion, IVC stent placement across the RenVs does not significantly impact renal function and rarely results in RenV thrombosis.
