Abstract:
Platypnea-orthodeoxia is a rare syndrome whose symptoms appear in the sitting position, characterized by worsening dyspnea with orthostatic positioning (platypnea) and measured hypoxia (orthodeoxia), relieved when lying down, with complex and variable etiologies. The main causes are a patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect. Transthoracic echocardiography with a bubble test is the preferred initial diagnostic examination. A thorough clinical assessment and careful review of imaging are often necessary for management, as multiple concomitant etiologies can coexist.
