Overview of Metabolism01:40

Overview of Metabolism

29.1K
Living cells constantly carry out various chemical reactions which are necessary for their proper functioning. These reactions are interlinked to one another via multiple pathways. The collection of these chemical reactions is known as metabolism.
Plant Metabolism
Sunlight, the primary source of energy in plants, is first absorbed by the chlorophyll pigments present in their leaves. Plants then use this energy to carry out photosynthesis, where water is oxidized into oxygen and carbon dioxide...

Clinical Trials: Overview

2.4K
Clinical development focuses on how the drug will interact with the human body and encompasses four key phases of clinical trials, each serving a specific purpose in assessing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. These phases overlap and build upon one another. Phase I involves a small group of healthy volunteers (typically 20-80 individuals) or, in cases where significant toxicity is expected, patients with the targeted disease, such as cancer or AIDS. The volunteers are tested for...

Key Elements for Plant Nutrition02:35

Key Elements for Plant Nutrition

18.5K
Like all living organisms, plants require organic and inorganic nutrients to survive, reproduce, grow and maintain homeostasis. To identify nutrients that are essential for plant functioning, researchers have leveraged a technique called hydroponics. In hydroponic culture systems, plants are grown—without soil—in water-based solutions containing nutrients. At least 17 nutrients have been identified as essential elements required by plants. Plants acquire these elements from the...

Taste Buds and Receptors

1.7K
Gustation, or the sense of taste, is intrinsically linked to the anatomical structures located on the tongue. This organ's surface, along with the entirety of the oral cavity, is adorned with stratified squamous epithelium. Evident on the tongue are elevated structures known as papillae (singular = papilla), which house the mechanisms for the transduction of gustatory stimuli. Four distinct types of papillae exist, each identified by their unique morphological attributes: the circumvallate,...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

106
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Summary

A whole food, plant-based diet intervention shows promise in improving nutrition and resilience during early substance use disorder (SUD) recovery. Further research is recommended for integrating dietary changes into SUD treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Standard substance use disorder (SUD) treatments infrequently include dietary interventions.
  • Nutrition's role in early recovery from SUDs remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of a whole food, plant-based diet on early recovery outcomes in individuals with SUDs.
  • To assess how nutritional changes influence mental health markers during addiction treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A 10-week study comparing a whole food, plant-based diet intervention group with a standard diet control group.
  • Participants (N=33) received weekly nutrition education; mental health markers were assessed at baseline, week 3, and week 10.
  • Dietary intake was measured using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and Plant-based Diet Indices (PDI); qualitative interviews were conducted.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group demonstrated significantly higher HEI-2015 and PDI scores (P < .001).
  • A significant effect of time was observed across psychosocial outcomes (P < .001–.02), with a notable condition-by-time interaction for Rosenberg Self-Esteem (P = .043).
  • Higher PDI scores correlated with significantly increased resilience at 10 weeks (P = .031).

Conclusions:

  • Whole food, plant-based nutrition shows modest but significant positive effects on early SUD recovery.
  • Integrating nutritional interventions into SUD treatment warrants further investigation.
  • Participants found value and meaning in the dietary intervention experience.
