Background:

  • Chronic inflammation is implicated in cancer development and progression.
  • Previous studies suggest a link between periodontitis (PE) and prostate cancer (PC), but findings are inconsistent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between periodontitis and prostate cancer.
  • To identify shared risk factors between periodontitis and prostate cancer.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 152 PC cases and 220 controls.
  • Participants received periodontal examinations and provided sociodemographic and medical data.
  • Logistic regression analysis assessed the association between PC occurrence/severity and covariates.

Main Results:

  • Higher prevalence and severity of PE were observed in PC cases (p=0.012, p=0.007).
  • PC occurrence was associated with lower education, smoking, alcohol, hypertension, and PE (OR=1.80).
  • PE was linked to Gleason grades 1 and 2 PC, but not higher grades.

Conclusions:

  • Periodontitis is associated with the occurrence of prostate cancer.
  • Screening for prostate alterations may benefit males diagnosed with periodontitis.
