Background:
Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a significant global health burden despite advances in treatment and prevention. Awareness and knowledge of TB among the general population are critical for effective disease control, especially in regions with a moderate incidence like Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Objective:
This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward tuberculosis among the general population of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to June 2023, targeting 392 adult residents of Riyadh. A structured questionnaire assessed demographic details, knowledge of tuberculosis transmission, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, as well as attitude, and practice toward the disease. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed using SPSS.
Results:
Among the 392 participants, 94.6% had heard of tuberculosis, with 85.2% aware that tuberculosis affects the lungs. However, knowledge about tuberculosis transmission and its bacterial cause was lacking in 14.5% and 31.1% of respondents, respectively. Significant associations were found between tuberculosis awareness and marital status (p=0.001) as well as occupation (p=0.001). Health providers had the highest awareness, while younger participants and housewives demonstrated lower awareness levels.

Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.

Several diagnostic approaches are used to detect TB. The conventional method is the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), also known as the Mantoux test. However, this method has...
Pulmonary Tuberculosis V
Latent tuberculosis infection occurs when TB bacteria are present in a person's body, but are not causing illness or symptoms. It is not contagious, and preventive treatment is crucial to avoid the...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis II
Here is a detailed explanation of its pathophysiology:
Transmission: The process begins when a person inhales droplet nuclei containing M. tuberculosis. These are typically released into the air when an individual with pulmonary or...
Sputum Studies II: Culture and Sensitivity
Sputum culture and sensitivity is a medical procedure used to diagnose bacterial infections in the respiratory tract and select the most appropriate antibiotics for treatment. This process involves analyzing sputum samples of thick and opaque secretions produced in the lungs and airways. These samples are collected from patients and then sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The test can identify various pathogens responsible for respiratory infections, including Streptococcus,...
