Background:
Achieving precise acetabular cup positioning is vital for the success of total hip arthroplasty (THA). Factors such as cup inclination and anteversion angles play a pivotal role in determining postoperative stability, limb length equality, and overall functional outcomes. Modern navigation systems and robotics have enhanced surgical precision but remain underutilized due to their high costs and complex training requirements.
Methods:
We have designed an economical and compact image-free navigation device for acetabular cup placement. By employing computer vision techniques using OpenCV, the device was tested on artificial hip models to ensure precision. A total of 50 angle measurements were analyzed for accuracy.
Results:
The tool demonstrated exceptional precision, with mean inclination angle errors of 0.15° (SD: 0.44°) and mean anteversion angle errors of -1.06° (SD: 0.34°), both statistically significant (p < 0.05).
Conclusion:
Our navigation device, which is portable and cost-effective, offers reliable guidance for acetabular cup positioning. Its affordability and ease of use make it an excellent alternative for resource-constrained settings.
