Abstract:
Accurate and cost-effective gas sensors are essential for environmental monitoring and industrial safety, yet advancements in gas-sensitive materials remain critical for enhancing performance. Here, we report the development of a ternary metal oxynitride, Y2Zr2O7-N (0.49 ≤ x ≤ 0.98), achieved through precise nitridation time control. Applied for the first time in electrochemical gas sensors, Y2Zr2O6.2N0.8, synthesized via a 10-hour nitridation process, exhibited exceptional response and selectivity for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature. The enhanced performance is attributed to the role of nitrogen and oxygen vacancies, which optimize NO2 adsorption and electron transfer. These findings highlight the potential of ternary metal oxynitrides as advanced electrochemical gas-sensitive materials, offering a transformative approach to developing high-performance, cost-effective sensors and broadening the scope of conventional gas-sensing systems.
