Indonesian Translation and Cultural Adaptation of the BREAST-Q Reconstruction Module

Background:

• The BREAST-Q reconstruction module is a key patient-reported outcome tool for assessing satisfaction and quality of life after breast surgery.
• No Indonesian translation of the BREAST-Q reconstruction module exists for Indonesian breast cancer patients.

Purpose of the Study:

• To translate and culturally adapt the BREAST-Q reconstruction module into Indonesian.
• To ensure the translated tool accurately captures patient-reported outcomes for Indonesian women undergoing breast reconstruction.

Main Methods:

• The translation followed International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research guidelines, including forward translation, reconciliation, back translation, and cognitive debriefing.
• Participants for cognitive debriefing were recruited from major hospitals and a patient support group in Indonesia.

Main Results:

• Discrepancies were noted during forward translation (34.8%) and back translation (11/279 items).
• Cognitive debriefing highlighted challenges with understanding and cultural relevance, leading to recommendations for adaptation based on local norms and beliefs.

Conclusions:

• The Indonesian translation of the BREAST-Q reconstruction module was successfully developed adhering to international standards.
• This validated Indonesian version will enable the assessment of patient satisfaction and quality of life in Indonesian breast cancer survivors.
