Background:
IT-Report Healthcare has analyzed the digitalization status of German hospitals over years, focusing on IT adoption, process support, and user satisfaction.
Objectives:
This study aims at presenting the current state of information continuity during the admission and discharge of patients.
Methods:
A survey of 496 hospitals was conducted over a three-month period in 2023. Data on IT structures, availability, and implementation status were collected using a standardized questionnaire.
Results:
Significant gaps in cross-sector information exchange were identified. Over 65% of hospitals did not integrate patient data from upstream care levels, and 67.9% lacked the transmission of electronic discharge letters. In contrast, internal digital instruments such as triage and emergency management (54.9%) were more widely available.
Conclusion:
Information continuity across settings requires substantial improvement. Legislative initiatives provide opportunities, but consistent implementation is essential. A follow-up survey in 2025 will assess progress.
