Summary

Unilateral amblyopia is linked to increased Central Macular Thickness (CMT) and thicker Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL) in affected eyes compared to fellow eyes. This study utilized Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to assess these differences.

Background:

  • Amblyopia, or 'lazy eye,' is a developmental disorder affecting visual acuity.
  • Anisometropia, a difference in refractive error between eyes, is a common cause of amblyopia.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique for cross-sectional visualization of the retina.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate Central Macular Thickness (CMT) and Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness (RNFLT) in unilateral amblyopia.
  • To compare OCT measurements between amblyopic eyes, fellow eyes, and normal controls.
  • To determine if specific refractive errors (anisomyopia, anisohyperopia) correlate with observed OCT changes.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 30 patients with unilateral amblyopia and 30 age-matched normal controls.
  • Ophthalmological examinations including vision and refraction assessment.
  • OCT imaging to measure CMT and RNFL thickness in all study groups.

Main Results:

  • Unilateral anisometropic amblyopia is associated with statistically significant increases in both CMT and global RNFL thickness.
  • These findings suggest structural retinal changes in the macula and RNFL in amblyopic eyes.
  • OCT parameters may serve as objective biomarkers for amblyopia assessment.
