Purpose:
This study aimed to evaluate changes in lenticular structures using the Pentacam HR in patients with acromegaly.
Design:
Prospective observational study.
Methods:
A total of 40 patients with acromegaly and 40 healthy volunteers were included in this prospective observational study. For anterior segment evaluation, lens densitometry values were analyzed in designated regions using the Pentacam HR Scheimpflug imaging system. The average values were calculated from predefined three-dimensional zones (Zone 1: 2.0 mm, Zone 2: 4.0 mm, and Zone 3: 6.0 mm), with the center of the pupil as the reference point.
Results:
Lens densitometry values in Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3 were significantly higher in the acromegaly group compared to the control group ( P < 0.05 for each). Both maximum and mean lens densitometry values were also significantly elevated in the acromegaly group ( P = 0.046 and P = 0.041, respectively). A moderate but significant positive correlation was found between growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels and the lens densitometry values in all three zones ( P < 0.05 for each).
Conclusion:
Lens densitometry was significantly higher in acromegaly patients than in healthy controls, and these values were positively correlated with IGF-1 and GH levels.
