War games are a growing recreational sport, but eye injuries are common. Most injuries occur when players neglect to wear provided protective eyewear, leading to severe vision loss.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Sports Medicine
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • War games are a popular recreational activity blending physical activity with strategic simulation.
    • The increasing popularity of war games has coincided with a rise in reported eye injuries among participants.
    • Protective eyewear, such as eyeguards, is often available to players.

    Observation:

    • A significant number of serious eye injuries were reported by Canadian ophthalmologists over the past year.
    • Twenty-six cases of eye injuries were documented.
    • In 15 of these cases, vision was severely impaired, reduced to 6/24 or worse.

    Findings:

    • All reported serious eye injuries occurred when participants were not wearing protective eyewear.
    • The non-use of available eyeguards is directly correlated with the incidence of severe eye trauma in war games.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The severity of injuries suggests a need for better adherence to safety protocols.
  • Implications:

    • There is a critical need for enhanced strategies to enforce the use of protective eyewear in war games.
    • Preventing eye injuries requires addressing player behavior and compliance with safety equipment.
    • Further research into effective injury prevention methods for recreational sports like war games is warranted.
