Summary

Persistent headaches after COVID-19 may be linked to white matter changes in the brain. This study found more white matter lesions in patients with post-COVID-19 headaches compared to controls, suggesting a potential structural basis for these chronic symptoms.

Background:

  • Headaches are a common neurological symptom of COVID-19, affecting about 25% of patients.
  • While most headaches resolve quickly, some persist for months, indicating potential underlying brain changes.
  • This study investigates brain MRI abnormalities in patients experiencing chronic headaches post-COVID-19 infection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify specific brain MRI abnormalities associated with chronic headaches in individuals with a history of COVID-19.
  • To compare MRI findings between patients with post-COVID-19 headaches and a control group without COVID-19 history.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 30 patients with post-COVID-19 headaches and 30 controls.
  • MRI findings were categorized into six types: cortical atrophy, white matter lesions, vascular lesions, lacunar lesions, vascular encephalopathy, and sinusitis.

  • The findings highlight the potential for neuroimaging to reveal mechanisms behind long-term COVID-19-related symptoms.
