Local anesthetics (LAs) block the sodium channels of nerve trunks, sensory nerve endings, and neuromuscular junctions. Background:

  • Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a key method for assessing Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the application of Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) as an outcome measure in Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) studies.
  • To identify inconsistencies and a lack of standardization in QST methodologies used in FMS research.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases until June 2024.
  • Selection of 126 studies (39 RCTs, 87 non-RCTs) meeting eligibility criteria, including QST and FMS diagnosis.
  • Assessment of risk of bias and eligibility criteria for included studies.

Main Results:

  • Significant lack of standardization in QST protocols across FMS studies.
  • Inconsistency observed in the number of tender points tested, sites selected, and types of QST performed.
  • No universally followed protocols were reported in the analyzed literature.

Conclusions:

  • Methodological heterogeneity in QST significantly impacts the comparability and interpretation of results in FMS studies.
  • There is an urgent need for standardized guidelines for conducting QST in fibromyalgia research.
  • Standardized QST approaches could lead to more accurate FMS assessment and improved patient management.
