Supervision and Training Issues in the Practice of Addictions Treatment: Factors That Impact Workforce Retention

Research indicates that supervision and training impact retention in the addictions treatment workforce. Consistent supervision and training may reduce overall turnover by increasing general well-being and job satisfaction. The objective of this quantitative cross-sectional research study was to review supervision and training factors that impact workforce shortages in the practice of addictions treatment. Research data collected from 167 addictions professionals indicated consistent supervision and training reduce the likelihood of professionals leaving their position; professionals who have a negative relationship with their supervisor are more likely to leave their position. Also, professionals are more likely to leave their position if supervision is not consistent. Overall, poor supervision and training can lead to poor work performance. Supervision and training play a pivotal role in fostering workforce development in the practice of addictions treatment and are an important investment in the community, helping to create a more productive, effective, and efficient support industry. Consistent supervision and training can provide addictions professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to provide support to the community.
