    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry

    Background:

    • Posttraumatic flashbacks are a key symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
    • These intrusive episodes can lead to accidents.
    • Previous research suggested a link between flashbacks and sleep disturbances.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To confirm the association between flashbacks and dream disturbances in PTSD patients.
    • To investigate if this association can predict flashback vulnerability.
    • To compare PTSD patients with flashbacks to those without, using the Impact of Event Scale.

    Main Methods:

    • A two-part study design was employed.
    • The study confirmed findings from a previous pilot study.
    • The Impact of Event Scale was used to compare patient groups.

    Main Results:

    • The association between flashbacks and dream disturbances in PTSD was confirmed.
    • Flashback patients reported more frequent intrusive elements overall.
    • Specifically, PTSD patients with flashbacks experienced more daytime mental imagery.

    Conclusions:

    • Dream disturbances and daytime mental imagery are more prevalent in PTSD patients with flashbacks.
    • These findings can aid in identifying PTSD patients at higher risk for flashbacks.
    • Understanding flashback triggers may contribute to preventing accidents in PTSD patients.
