Abstract:
Epidemiologic studies identified sexual factors as substantial risk factors for cervical cancer. This was followed by the hypothesis by zur Hausen that human papillomavirus (HPV) was the etiologic infectious agent. Development in molecular technology initiated a period of synergy where collaboration between different disciplines led to the recognition of HPV as a necessary factor in cervical carcinogenesis and subsequently to the development of a vaccine against HPV. Together with cervical cancer screening, this review finds that HPV vaccination should make it possible to eliminate cervical cancer in the not-so-distant future.
