Summary

New ultrasound imaging methods, Coprime Sub-sampled Angle (CSA) and Semi Sub-sampled Angle (SSA), improve image quality while reducing data acquisition time. These techniques effectively suppress grating lobes in plane wave compounding, enhancing medical ultrasound diagnostics.

Background:

Coherent plane wave compounding in ultrasound imaging balances frame rate and image quality.
Sub-sampling angles presents challenges in maintaining image quality and reducing acquisition time.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose novel methods for optimal angle selection in sub-sampled plane wave compounding.
To address the trade-off between frame rate and image quality in ultrasound imaging.

Main Methods:

Developed Coprime Sub-sampled Angle (CSA) and Semi Sub-sampled Angle (SSA) techniques.
Strategically selected angle subsets to suppress grating lobes caused by down-sampling.
Validated methods using the Plane-wave Imaging Challenge in Medical Ultrasound dataset.

Main Results:

CSA achieved comparable resolution with an 8.4% contrast ratio improvement using only 25.3% of angles.
SSA achieved similar resolution with a 7.7% contrast gain using 36% of angles.
Both methods demonstrated controlled and robust suppression of grating lobes, preserving speckle quality.

Conclusions:

CSA and SSA offer effective solutions for sub-sampled angle configurations in plane wave compounding.
These methods provide a superior balance between frame rate and image quality compared to traditional subsampling.
The proposed techniques enhance the practicality and diagnostic value of ultrasound imaging.
