Background:

The 2024 dermatology residency application cycle saw the public release of ChatGPT, an advanced language model.
Applicants can now utilize AI for generating or enhancing personal statements.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine trends in AI-generated content within dermatology residency applications from 2022 to 2024.
To assess the implications of AI usage for program directors.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 1500 deidentified personal statements and control essays.
Utilized AI detection tools: Quillbot, Scribbr, and ZeroGPT.
Statistical analysis including ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and MANOVA.

Main Results:

A significant increase in AI-generated content was observed in the 2024 application cycle compared to 2022 and 2023.
Year-specific differences in AI detection scores were statistically confirmed (Wilks' Lambda, P<0.0001).

Conclusions:

Dermatology residency applications show an increasing reliance on AI tools for personal statements.
Future research should investigate stakeholder perspectives to guide AI usage regulations in applications.
