Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy: Instrumentation01:26

Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy: Instrumentation

1.1K
Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is the common plasma source used in atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), a technique that detects and analyzes various elements in a sample. This method is often called inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).
There are three main types of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy  (ICP-AES) instruments: sequential, simultaneous multichannel, and Fourier transform instruments, with the latter being less commonly used....

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Imaging
    • Ultrasound Technology
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Background:

    • High-end 4-D ultrasound systems use 2-D arrays with thousands of transducers, managed by ASICs, but their closed architecture limits research.
    • Existing systems restrict experimental testing of novel imaging techniques due to proprietary designs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and demonstrate a novel 4-D ultrasound imaging research platform.
    • To overcome the limitations of closed-architecture systems for advanced ultrasound research.

    Main Methods:

    • Integration of the ULA-OP 256 open scanner with the Adult 4D Premium transesophageal probe (3072-transducer array).
    • Development of custom hardware, software, and firmware for the open scanner.
    • Validation through comparison of simulated and experimental acoustic fields (focused wide beams, planar diverging waves).

    Main Results:

    • The platform achieved real-time reconstruction of over 800 frames/s over arbitrary planes using planar diverging waves.
    • Demonstrated in vivo bi-plane B-Mode images of the carotid artery and dynamic multigate spectral Doppler images.
    • Successfully validated simulated and experimental acoustic fields.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel platform integrates a programmable open scanner with a high-density 2-D array, enabling unprecedented research capabilities.
    • It facilitates real-time evaluation of innovative 4-D imaging and Doppler methods.
    • This platform has the potential to significantly advance ultrasound applications previously limited by transducer element count.
