Increased nurse contact time with patients is linked to lower in-hospital mortality. A 10-minute rise in daily nurse-patient interaction time correlated with a 0.05% decrease in mortality, highlighting the value of direct patient care.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Management
- Nursing Research
- Patient Outcomes
Background:
- Previous studies link higher nurse staffing to improved patient outcomes.
- The specific impact of direct nurse-patient contact time on outcomes is not well understood.
- Quantifying actual time spent in direct care is challenging.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between nurse contact time and patient hospital outcomes.
- To quantify the association between direct nursing care duration and in-hospital mortality.
- To explore the utility of novel data sources for measuring patient-provider interactions.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a Real-Time Location System (RTLS) with Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors to track staff and patient movements.
- Estimated daily patient contact time with nursing staff, distinguishing direct bedside care.
- Analyzed the correlation between contact time and in-hospital mortality rates.
Main Results:
- Patients averaged 8 hours of contact with nurses daily, with 22 minutes of direct bedside care.
- A statistically significant association was found between total daily contact time and in-hospital mortality.
- Each 10-minute increase in daily contact time was associated with a 0.05% reduction in mortality.
Conclusions:
- Direct nurse-patient contact time is a significant factor in hospital patient outcomes.
- Novel tracking technologies can effectively measure patient-provider interaction time.
- Healthcare institutions should prioritize strategies to maximize meaningful patient-nurse contact time.
