Predicting Products: Substitution vs. Elimination02:52

Predicting Products: Substitution vs. Elimination

11.3K
When a nucleophile and an alkyl halide react, nucleophilic substitution and β-elimination reactions compete to generate products.
The following factors can influence the mechanisms competing against each other:

Decision Making: P-value Method

5.2K
The process of hypothesis testing based on the P-value method includes calculating the P- value using the sample data and interpreting it.
First, a specific claim about the population parameter is proposed. The claim is based on the research question and is stated in a simple form. Further, an opposing statement to the claim  is also stated. These statements can act as null and alternative hypotheses:  a null hypothesis would be a neutral statement while the alternative hypothesis can...

Production Efficiency01:01

Production Efficiency

16.7K
Net production efficiency (NPE) is the efficiency at which organisms assimilate energy into biomass for the next trophic level. Due to low metabolic rates and less energy spent on thermoregulatory processes, the NPE of ectotherms (cold-blooded animals) is 10 times higher than endotherms (warm-blooded animals).

Introduction to Statistical Process Control01:15

Introduction to Statistical Process Control

64
Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a method used to monitor and control quality within processes, particularly in manufacturing and service delivery, by employing statistical methods. SPC aims to distinguish between natural (common cause) variation and variation due to specific changes or events (special cause), allowing for timely improvements and sustained quality. The control chart, a pivotal tool in SPC, visually displays data over time alongside a central line of upper and lower control...

Base Quantities and Derived Quantities01:14

Base Quantities and Derived Quantities

19.6K
In any system of units, the units for some physical quantities must be specified through a measurement process. These measurements are the base quantities of the system, and their units are the base units of the system. The algebraic combinations of the base values can then be used to express all other physical quantities. Each of these physical quantities is then referred to as a derived quantity, with each unit being referred to as a derived unit.

Estimation of the Physical Quantities01:05

Estimation of the Physical Quantities

4.0K
On many occasions, physicists, other scientists, and engineers need to make estimates of a particular quantity. These are sometimes referred to as guesstimates, order-of-magnitude approximations, back-of-the-envelope calculations, or Fermi calculations. The physicist Enrico Fermi was famous for his ability to estimate various kinds of data with surprising precision. Estimating does not mean guessing a number or a formula at random. Instead, estimation means using prior experience and sound...

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Healthcare Management
    • Operations Research

    Background:

    • The Clinical Engineering (CE) Department at CHEO experienced significant staff growth without process evolution.
    • Inefficient parts procurement and inventory management led to discrepancies between physical stock and the CMMS.
    • Lack of standardized processes resulted in wasted resources, decreased accountability, and low staff confidence in data.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To address inefficiencies in the CE parts procurement and inventory management system.
    • To implement Lean methodologies and the DMAIC framework to improve operational workflows.
    • To enhance data accuracy, reduce costs, and improve stakeholder morale within the CE department.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized Lean methodologies and the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC) structure.
    • Employed tools such as interviews, surveys, process mapping, and Gemba walks to identify and prioritize problems.
    • Formulated 16 problems, identifying four essential prerequisites for implementation.

    Main Results:

    • Identified and prioritized key issues within the parts procurement and inventory process.
    • Developed a foundational understanding of the scope and potential solutions for critical problems.
    • Established a clear path for workflow improvement.

    Conclusions:

    • Lean methodologies and DMAIC provide a robust framework for optimizing CE operations.
    • Standardized processes are crucial for accurate inventory management and CMMS reliability.
    • Improving parts management workflows can lead to significant cost savings and enhanced staff engagement.
