Analgesia and Pain Management01:25

Analgesia and Pain Management

403
Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Nociception01:44

Nociception

27.6K
Nociception—the ability to feel pain—is essential for an organism’s survival and overall well-being. Noxious stimuli such as piercing pain from a sharp object, heat from an open flame, or contact with corrosive chemicals are first detected by sensory receptors, called nociceptors, located on nerve endings. Nociceptors express ion channels that convert noxious stimuli into electrical signals. When these signals reach the brain via sensory neurons, they are perceived as pain.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Nutritional Science
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Chronic pain, particularly neuropathic pain, is a major public health concern affecting daily life and quality of life.
  • Current pain treatments have limited efficacy, highlighting the need for personalized management strategies.
  • Neuropathic pain is linked to inflammation and oxidative stress, with emerging evidence suggesting a role for diet.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an overview of neuropathic pain.
  • To examine the potential of melatonin as an adjunctive therapy for neuropathic pain.
  • To explore a neuro-nutritional approach to pain management.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of neuropathic pain.
  • Analysis of melatonin's properties (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory).
  • Investigation of dietary links to neuropathic pain.

Main Results:

  • Melatonin possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • Dietary intake of melatonin and polyphenols may influence health.
  • Further research is needed to understand melatonin's role in neuropathic pain.

Conclusions:

  • Melatonin shows potential as an adjunctive treatment for neuropathic pain.
  • A neuro-nutritional strategy incorporating melatonin could improve pain management.
  • Understanding dietary pathways is crucial for personalized pain care.
