Adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show higher difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) and alexithymia. Emotion dysregulation mediates the link between OCD and negative coping strategies.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Neuroscience
Background:
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) significantly impairs daily functioning.
- Emotion regulation (ER), alexithymia, and maladaptive coping are implicated in OCD.
- This study focuses on adolescents with a sole OCD diagnosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between ER, alexithymia, and coping strategies in adolescents with OCD.
- To explore the mediating role of ER in the association between OCD and coping.
- To differentiate these factors in adolescents with OCD compared to healthy controls.
Main Methods:
- 93 adolescents with OCD and 92 healthy controls participated.
- Exclusion criteria included any psychiatric disorder other than OCD.
- Standardized assessments included CY-BOCS, DERS, TAS, and KidCOPE.
Main Results:
- OCD group exhibited higher scores on TAS, DERS, and KidCOPE-Avoidant Coping.
- Significant positive correlations were found between OCD severity (CY-BOCS scores) and DERS-Total scores.
- ER difficulties mediated the relationship between OCD and negative coping severity.
Conclusions:
- Findings suggest a link between OCD, emotion dysregulation, alexithymia, and avoidant coping in adolescents.
- Emotion dysregulation appears to play a mediating role.
- Highlights the need for tailored interventions addressing these specific challenges in adolescent OCD.
