Increased mucociliary transport by adrenergic stimulation.

P Camner, K Strandberg, K Philipson

    Summary

Terbutaline sulfate, a beta-adrenoceptor stimulant, significantly enhanced tracheobronchial clearance in healthy subjects. This suggests that blood catecholamines may regulate mucociliary transport rate.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonary physiology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Tracheobronchial clearance is crucial for lung defense.
    • The role of beta-adrenoceptors in mucociliary transport is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of terbutaline sulfate, a beta-adrenoceptor stimulant, on tracheobronchial clearance in healthy individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Healthy subjects inhaled radiolabeled Teflon particles.
    • Tracheobronchial clearance was measured over two hours using external radioactivity detection.
    • Subjects received either terbutaline sulfate or a vehicle in a double-blind, crossover study.

    Main Results:

    • Terbutaline sulfate significantly increased tracheobronchial clearance.
    • A slight increase in heart rate was observed with terbutaline.
    • Salivary secretion and blood pressure were not significantly affected.

    Conclusions:

    • Beta-adrenoceptor stimulation, via terbutaline, enhances mucociliary transport.
    • Blood catecholamine concentrations may play a regulatory role in mucociliary clearance.
