Synergistic Enhancement of Overall Water Splitting across All pH Levels Using CTAB-Assisted FeNi Alloy Nanoclusters

Abstract:
As-synthesized spherical FeNi alloy nanoclusters (NCs), supported by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were evaluated for overall water-splitting reactions, i.e., oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), in both alkaline and acidic media, respectively. The alloy NCs exhibited overpotentials of 203 and 170 mV (@ 10 mA/cm2) for OER and HER, respectively, with long-term potential/current stability. The excellent electrochemical response is attributed to changes in their electronic structure, and unique synergistic effects demonstrate outstanding catalytic stability and electrode kinetics.
