Active Surveillance for Myocarditis and Pericarditis in Canadian Children from 2021 to 2022: A Canadian Immunization

COVID-19 mRNA vaccination was associated with increased myocarditis, myopericarditis, and pericarditis risk in children. However, vaccinated children experienced less severe initial illness compared to unvaccinated cases.

- The adjusted relative incidence of myocarditis/myopericarditis/pericarditis within 0-21 days post-vaccination was 7.1.
Conclusions:
- COVID-19 mRNA vaccination is associated with an increased relative incidence of myocarditis, myopericarditis, and pericarditis in children.
- Despite the association, children experiencing these conditions following vaccination appeared to have a less severe clinical course compared to unvaccinated children.
