Hyperactive boys almost grown up. I. Psychiatric status.

    Archives of General Psychiatry

    Summary

Childhood hyperactivity, or attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), persisting into adolescence significantly increases the risk for conduct and substance use disorders. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing ADHD symptoms and preventing associated behavioral issues.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Childhood hyperactivity, now known as attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), is a common neurodevelopmental disorder.
    • Longitudinal studies are essential for understanding the long-term outcomes of childhood conditions.
    • Previous research suggests a link between childhood ADHD and later behavioral problems, but specific risk factors require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the long-term persistence of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) from childhood into adolescence.
    • To examine the association between persistent ADHD symptoms and the development of conduct and substance use disorders in male adolescents.
    • To identify ADHD as a potential risk factor for antisocial behavior and drug abuse.

    Main Methods:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • A prospective longitudinal study design was employed.
    • 101 male adolescents diagnosed with hyperactivity in childhood (ages 6-12) were compared with 100 normal controls.
    • Diagnostic assessments, including DSM-III criteria, were conducted blindly to group membership, with 98% follow-up.

    Main Results:

    • Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) persisted in 31% of probands versus 3% of controls.
    • Conduct and substance use disorders were significantly more prevalent in the persistent ADHD group.
    • These comorbid disorders aggregated significantly among probands with continued ADHD symptoms.

    Conclusions:

    • Persistent ADHD symptoms in adolescence are a significant risk factor for developing conduct and substance use disorders.
    • The maintenance of ADHD symptoms is strongly linked to the development of antisocial behavior and drug abuse.
    • Conduct disorder often precedes substance use disorders in individuals with persistent ADHD.
