Abstract:
Oral cavity care is essential for the health and well-being of zoo-housed mammals, as captive diets often fail to replicate their natural feeding behaviors, leading to a variety of oral and dental diseases. Different species face unique challenges that are influenced by diet, environment, and behavioral stressors. Regular oral/dental examinations, advanced-imaging, and preventive strategies, including diet optimization and environmental enrichment, are crucial for maintaining oral and dental health. Early detection and intervention improve overall health and quality of life. Tailored-veterinary approaches ensure effective management of oral and dental diseases, contributing to better welfare and conservation outcomes in zoologic collections.
