Background:

  • Canine cardiac hemangiosarcoma (cHSA) presents a high risk of mortality due to cardiac tamponade and metastasis.
  • Radiation therapy (RT) has shown promise in mitigating tamponade risk, but optimal protocols require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate outcomes in dogs with presumptive cHSA treated with diverse RT protocols.
  • To compare outcomes based on chemotherapy use, RT fractionation, and CT-guided planning.
  • To contrast findings with existing literature on canine cardiac hemangiosarcoma management.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 27 dogs with echocardiographic evidence of cardiac masses treated with RT.
  • Comparison of pericardiocentesis frequency before and after RT.
