Consumer satisfaction with orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) services is high. However, the Orthotics and Prosthetics User's Survey Client Satisfaction with Services (OPUS-CSS) may not effectively differentiate highly satisfied consumers due to a ceiling effect.
Area of Science:
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Accreditation bodies mandate consumer satisfaction measurement for orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) services.
- The Orthotics and Prosthetics User's Survey Client Satisfaction with Services (OPUS-CSS) is a validated tool for assessing O&P consumer satisfaction.
- Normative population data for the OPUS-CSS are currently lacking for benchmarking purposes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish normative population data for the OPUS-CSS within Australia.
- To identify demographic and service-related factors associated with the highest and lowest consumer satisfaction quartiles.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective cohort study design was employed.
- Adult O&P consumers and guardians of pediatric consumers were convenience sampled.
- An electronic survey, including demographics, service factors, and the OPUS-CSS module, was administered upon O&P provision.
Main Results:
- A total of 180 consumers participated, reporting high satisfaction (OPUS-CSS median score 78.7).
- A positive skew and ceiling effect were observed in the OPUS-CSS score distribution.
- Key differentiating factors between satisfaction quartiles included age, education, income, work status, comorbidities, Indigenous status, and language spoken at home.
Conclusions:
- Consumers generally report high satisfaction with O&P services.
- The OPUS-CSS may have limitations in distinguishing very high satisfaction levels due to a ceiling effect.
- These pilot data provide a foundation for future research into factors influencing O&P consumer satisfaction.

Testing a Claim about Population Proportion
There are two methods of testing a claim about a population proportion: (1) Using the sample proportion from the data where a binomial distribution is approximated to the normal distribution and (2) Using the binomial probabilities calculated from the data.
The first method uses normal distribution as an approximation to the binomial distribution. The requirements are as follows: sample size is large...
