    Summary

    This study found lower thyroid hormone levels in myasthenia gravis patients. These findings suggest secondary hypothyroidism may be linked to the hypophyseo-hypothalamic system in myasthenia gravis.

    Background:

    • Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder affecting neuromuscular junctions.
    • Thyroid dysfunction is sometimes observed in patients with myasthenia gravis, but the relationship is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate thyroid function in patients with myasthenia gravis.
    • To determine the levels of key thyroid hormones and their relationship to the disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioassay methods were used to measure serum thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine-binding protein (BT4), and thyrotrophic hormone (TSH) in 27 myasthenia gravis patients and 13 controls.
    • Thyroid hormone levels were also assessed after TSH administration in a subset of patients.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with myasthenia gravis showed statistically significant decreases in T4 (p<0.05) and T3 (p<0.01) compared to controls.
    • Exogenous TSH administration led to a 40% increase in T3 and a 6% increase in T4.

    Conclusions:

    • The results suggest the presence of secondary hypothyroidism in myasthenia gravis.
    • This may be attributed to a potential failure within the hypophyseo-hypothalamic system.
