Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Community-Based Participatory Research
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Community engagement is essential for addressing public health challenges and promoting health equity.
  • Community-academic partnerships leverage local strengths to meet community needs effectively.
  • Prior research indicates a need for strength-based, locally relevant interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To collaborate with residents of Milwaukee's Near West Side (NWS) using community-engaged approaches.
  • To identify community strengths and assets to prioritize actions for improving health and quality of life.
  • To inform the development of a community resource center through resident input.

Main Methods:

  • A community-academic partnership utilized group concept mapping (GCM) with NWS residents (N=165).
  • GCM involved idea generation, sorting, rating, and cluster map development.
  • Data analysis identified 9 key domains prioritized by residents for community improvement.

Main Results:

  • Residents generated 71 unique ideas to enhance community health.
  • A cluster map revealed 9 domains: housing, public safety, health services, neighborhoods, youth investment, infrastructure, businesses, transportation, and social spaces.
  • Eight of the nine domains were highly rated for importance by residents.

Conclusions:

  • Community engagement principles within partnerships are significant for developing strength-based, mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Prioritized domains provide focus areas for partnership efforts to advance NWS health and well-being.
  • This approach ensures interventions align with community-identified needs and priorities.
