Faced with the crisis in medical demographics and growing patient expectations, advanced practice nurses (APNs) are positioning themselves as an innovative solution, but one that is struggling to gain a foothold. Obstacles include both their demanding training and their delicate social position. Sometimes inaccurate representations of their role create tensions and misunderstandings. Finally, doctors' reluctance to delegate some of their tasks, notably because of professional monopolies, hinders their full recognition. A review of professional boundaries is needed to maximize the benefits of APNs, for patients, the healthcare system and even doctors!
