Injuries in veteran judo athletes and practitioners: a descriptive cross-sectional study

Background:
The constant practice of judo over the years and continued participation in competitions can lead these groups to have some type of injury in some moment, especially for the veteran judo groups with different ages (30-65 years).
Objectives:
This study explores the prevalence of injuries in veteran judo athletes and practitioners.
Methods:
This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study that explored the injuries in 258 veteran judo participants (215 men and 43 women) by specific and validated forms. The chi-square test was used to analyze the association between frequency of injuries and age categories considering male and female groups. In addition, verify the association between injuries and other mechanism related to sports practice.
Results:
Male groups presented more injuries compared to female groups (p < .001). Knee (19 %) and shoulder (18 %) were the body regions with the highest frequency of injuries among veterans (p < .001). and most surgeries (knee, 6 % and shoulder 2 %, p < .001). No association was found for injuries by age, and other aspects considering athletes and practitioners (p > .05).
Conclusions:
This investigation demonstrated that veteran judo athletes and practitioners reported at least one type of injury, being more significant in males, especially in the knee and shoulder body regions. In addition, the mechanism, nature, severity, and return to training perspective are similar between groups.
