We created a computational model to clarify implicit information in informed consent documents using the Informed Consent Ontology (ICO). This approach enhances health information technology by enabling better understanding of permissions from informed consent life cycles.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Ontology Engineering
- Computational Law
Background:
- Informed consent documents often contain implicit information, making computational processing challenging.
- Existing methods lack robust frameworks for representing and deducing permissions from informed consent.
- The Informed Consent Ontology (ICO) provides a structured representation of informed consent information.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and demonstrate a software implementation for integrating the ICO.
- To express implicit descriptions and conceptual permissions within the informed consent life cycle.
- To elucidate incomplete information in informed consent documents using a computational model.
Main Methods:
- Developed a simulated process for software implementation.
- Utilized the Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) for rule-based permission representation.
- Integrated the ICO with SWRL to computationally deduce information from informed consent documents.
- Applied the model to "All of Us" informed consent documents.
Main Results:
- Successfully demonstrated a software implementation integrating the ICO.
- Showcased the ability to express implicit descriptions and conceptual permissions.
- Elucidated incomplete information in informed consent documents through computational modeling.
- Validated the approach using real-world informed consent data.
Conclusions:
- The developed computational approach effectively integrates the ICO to express and deduce permissions.
- This method enhances health information technology by clarifying complex informed consent information.
- Future work includes applying this approach to specific sub-domains like vaccine informed consent.
