The EmboTrap III stent retriever demonstrated high success rates in achieving reperfusion and first-pass effect for acute ischemic stroke patients. This multicenter study showed promising outcomes with low complication rates.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Interventional Neurology
- Medical Devices
Background:
- Mechanical thrombectomy is a standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion.
- The EmboTrap III stent retriever represents a new iteration in endovascular therapy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the EmboTrap III stent retriever in a multicenter US setting.
- To assess outcomes including first-pass effect, reperfusion rates, and functional outcomes in patients treated with EmboTrap III.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 92 patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with EmboTrap III across 4 US centers.
- Data collected included baseline characteristics, procedural details, and outcomes such as first-pass effect (FPE), modified FPE (mFPE), final mTICI scores, and 90-day modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores.
- Complications related to the device were also recorded.
Main Results:
- Successful reperfusion (mTICI ≥ 2b) was achieved in 91.3% of patients.
- First-pass effect (mTICI ≥ 2c) was observed in 53.3%, and modified FPE (mTICI ≥ 2b) in 79.3% of cases.
- At 90 days, 22.9% of patients achieved a modified Rankin Scale score of ≤ 2, with no device-related complications.
Conclusions:
- The EmboTrap III stent retriever is effective in achieving high rates of final recanalization and first-pass effect in acute ischemic stroke.
- The device demonstrated a favorable safety profile with low complication rates in this multicenter experience.
- These findings support the EmboTrap III as a viable option for mechanical thrombectomy in large vessel occlusion stroke.
