    Summary

    Fever can slightly increase intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure in animals during the initial "chill" phase. This study investigated these physiological changes in rabbits and cats during induced fever.

    Background:

    • Fever is a complex physiological response involving multiple body systems.
    • The impact of fever on intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of pyrogen-induced fever on intracranial pressures in unanesthetized animals.
    • To correlate changes in ICP and CSF pressure with other physiological variables during fever.

    Main Methods:

    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure measured via direct cannulation of the lateral cerebral ventricle in rabbits and cats.
    • Intracranial pressure (ICP) measured using a subarachnoid screw technique in rabbits.
    • Intravenous administration of bacterial pyrogen (from Salmonella abortus equi) to induce fever.

    Main Results:

    • Pyrogen administration led to increased body temperature, decreased CSF/ICP pulse rate, increased pulse pressure amplitude, and a slight rise in mean CSF/ICP.
    • Significant increases in venous and arterial blood pressure were observed.
    • Respiratory rate decreased, cutaneous vasoconstriction occurred in ears, and arterial carbon dioxide tension changed during fever phases.

    Conclusions:

    • Pyrogen-induced fever causes a slight increase in intracranial pressures during the 'chill' phase in rabbits and cats.
    • These pressure changes are associated with systemic physiological alterations, including cardiovascular and respiratory adjustments.
