Understanding disabilities: Prevalence, health disparities, and pathways to improvement
Abstract:
Many healthcare providers lack confidence in and knowledge about treating individuals with disabilities. Health disparities within groups with disabilities are significant, and intersectional factors contribute to these disparities. To address these issues, healthcare facilities must accommodate individuals with disabilities through accessible environments and assistive technologies. Training healthcare providers on disability awareness and implementing inclusive practices can improve care delivery. NPs can play a critical role in addressing disability-related health disparities by prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity. This article underscores the importance of systemic changes, provider education, and patient advocacy in creating a healthcare system that truly serves everyone.
