GLP-1 receptor agonists: The good, the bad, and the ugly-A comprehensive guide for NPs
Abstract:
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are widely used in primary care for diabetes, obesity, and other conditions, offering glycemic control, weight loss, and cardioprotection. This article explores the indications, benefits, risks, and prescribing considerations of GLP-1RAs for nurse practitioners (NPs). Although effective, GLP-1RAs present challenges, including gastrointestinal side effects, accessibility issues, and serious risks like pancreatitis. NPs play a key role in patient education, monitoring, and advocacy to ensure equitable access and safe prescribing. Emerging research suggests expanded indications for cardiovascular, hepatic, and neurocognitive benefits. This review provides a comprehensive guide for NPs to optimize GLP-1RA therapy in clinical practice.
