Abstract:
Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at the forefront of patient care and are frequently exposed to infectious agents, including Streptococcus pneumoniae. Despite their critical role, HCWs are not universally recognized as a priority group for pneumococcal vaccination. This review highlights the increased risk of pneumococcal infections among HCWs, including their vulnerability as a result of underlying comorbidities, explores the implications of such infections on healthcare delivery, and puts forth a case for routine pneumococcal vaccination in HCWs. It also identifies barriers in vaccination of HCWs and proposes measures to tackle those on individual and policy level. Vaccinating HCWs could mitigate risks to both providers and their patients, reduce disease burden, and strengthen healthcare systems.
