Mindful self-care (MSC) significantly predicts nurses' work engagement by enhancing resilience and reducing compassion fatigue. Promoting MSC is recommended for nurse managers to boost engagement and well-being.
Area of Science:
- Nursing
- Occupational Health
- Psychology
Background:
- Work engagement in nurses is affected by factors like compassion fatigue (negative) and resilience (positive).
- The impact of mindful self-care (MSC) on nurse work engagement requires validation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the relationship between MSC and work engagement in Israeli nurses.
- To investigate the mediating roles of compassion fatigue, resilience, and internal health locus of control (IHLC) in the MSC-work engagement link.
Main Methods:
- Quantitative, cross-sectional study with 845 nurses in Israel.
- Online self-administered questionnaires assessed MSC, compassion fatigue, resilience, IHLC, and work engagement.
- Path analysis was used to test a model based on the Job Demands-Resources Theory.
Main Results:
- The model explained 17.2% of the variance in work engagement.
- MSC, resilience, and compassion fatigue directly predicted work engagement.
- MSC's effect on work engagement was mediated by compassion fatigue and resilience.
Conclusions:
- Mindful self-care (MSC) is a significant predictor of nurse work engagement.
- MSC enhances resilience and mitigates compassion fatigue, thereby improving work engagement.
- Nurse managers should encourage regular MSC practice to boost work engagement.
