We delineate the revelation of nickel-catalyzed C-N bond formation through ring remodeling and C-C bond activation. In this transformation, the C-C bond of 2-aryl-1,3-indanedione is activated by the nickel catalyst, and subsequently, the nitrogen atom of enamine is inserted therein, leading to the formation of C-N and C-C bonds. This offers a unique way to access a series of polycyclic nitrogen-containing scaffolds. These scaffolds were obtained in good yields. Moreover, it shows wide tolerance to functional groups and has an extensive substrate scope.
