Lucio's Leprosy and Lucio's Phenomenon: The Man Behind the Eponymous

Rafael Lucio was a Mexican physician, scientist, and professor of medicine, became interested in studying medicine at the Establishment of Medical Sciences in Mexico City in 1838; obtained his degree when he was 23 years old and started teaching at that School of Medicine, and he became famous for his commitment and enforcement and was a very distinguished teacher for 36 years. He also became the director of the School of Medicine and involved in a fundraising campaign to purchase a house for the school. He was also the last director of the Saint Lazarus Hospital, where he studied and described the form of leprosy and the acute reaction that today are well-known with his name. He was one of the physicians of Emperor Maximilian I and of President Benito Juárez. There is a statue of him in Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, some streets in several states of México, as well as a municipality and a hospital of the state of Veracruz bear his name.
