    Topical cerium nitrate (CE) cream may help restore cell-mediated immunity (CMI) suppressed by major thermal injury. This could reduce infection risk in burn patients.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effect of topical antimicrobial agents on postburn immunosuppression.
    • To determine if topical agents can restore suppressed CMI in burn-injured mice.

    • Adult female mice received a 20% steam burn.
    • Burned mice were treated with topical cerium nitrate (CE), silver sulfadiazine (SSD), mafenide (SML), silver nitrate (AG), or a CE-SSD mixture.
