[Modern concepts of sleep disturbances associated with mental disorders]

Abstract:
Insomnia is a highly prevalent condition in the general population that has multiple social and health consequences. Insomnia can be both a separate clinical syndrome and a symptom of many mental disorders, thereby increasing the severity of the underlying disease and the risk of relapse. Some medications can also cause insomnia. Timely treatment of insomnia can lead to a favorable outcome (recovery) not only by alleviating the symptoms of a concomitant mental disorder, but also by preventing new episodes. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of the association between insomnia and mental illness. This review addresses this association and provides guidelines for diagnosis and therapy.

Melatonin congeners like ramelteon (Rozerem) and tasimelteon (Hetlioz) selectively bind to melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) and thus mimic the actions of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Tasimelteon is primarily used for non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder, common in blind patients. They are also used to treat conditions like insomnia...
