General pediatricians have a unique role in supporting breastfeeding goals of families due to the frequency of well visits and weight checks during the first few weeks of life. Many interventions to improve breastfeeding longevity such as the "baby friendly" initiatives have focused primarily on hospital policies, with special attention given to the immediate postpartum period. While this is a crucial time to support the mother/infant dyad, most dyads do not encounter many common challenges to breastfeeding until after hospital discharge. This article outlines the current state of pediatric resident competency in supporting a family's breastfeeding goals.
